San Angelo Central falls to Odessa in area series

After winning the series opener Friday night, the San Angelo Central High School baseball team dropped the final two Saturday in a Class 6A Region I area playoff against former district rival Odessa High in Stanton.

The Bobcats took Game 1 4-2 in Abilene on Friday, but dropped Game 2 6-5 Saturday in Stanton, where the series was moved due to inclement weather.

Odessa forced a decisive third game and the Bronchos handcuffed the Bobcats with a 4-0 shutout to end Central's season.

"It was one of those things where they were the better team and they're moving on and we're not," Central head coach Patrick Penry said. "I'm just extremely proud of the way our kids held their heads up. They competed.

"It just wasn't in the cards. You can tell a lot about winners whenever they lose and I know that these kids are destined for great things just by the poise that they've had on and off the field."

Odessa improved to 20-11-1 and advanced to the regional quarterfinals next week against El Paso Montwood. Central finished 24-14-1.

Penry says Saturday's games won't define his team's season.
