The Odessa High baseball team pushed Wolfforth Frenship all the way Thursday, but the Tigers were able to hold on for a 3-2 victory at Pressley Field as the District 2-6A baseball schedule began in earnest. For Odessa High coach Joshua Hulin, it was baseball the way the game is supposed to be played. “I just thought it was a fun game to coach and watch,” Hulin said. “It was fun to watch our guys compete at the plate and fun to watch Nick (Arenivas) pitch. It was just a fun game to be at.” Odessa High (10-4-1 overall) dropped to 0-2 in district with both losses coming by a run. Defending district champion Frenship (13-4, 2-0) counted itself lucky to escape with the victory, Tigers coach Chad Reynolds said. “Any time you can go on the road in our district and get a win, you feel really good about it,” Reynolds said. “Odessa High’s a good team.” Frenship’s Colton Brown edged out Arenivas with each going the distance in a classic pitcher’s duel in the second district outing for both teams. Both teams played their 2-6A openers two weeks ago as part of the Tournament of Champions in Midland. Brown held the Bronchos to two runs on five hits while striking out five and walking four. Arenivas gave up three runs on six hits with a strikeout and a walk. “Their guy on the mound (Arenivas) did a really good job keeping us off balance,” Reynolds said. “We didn’t square up many balls, but we did enough to score enough runs to win the game. “Our guy on the mound, Colton Brown, did a good job. He didn’t have his best stuff, but he battled. He’s a competitor.” Arenivas threw just 71 pitches, getting though the fourth inning on four pitches. “I felt like my stuff was working today in order to let them hit and let my defense work,” Arenivas said. “That was what I was trying to do out there.” Frenship’s Caeden Jenkins, batting ninth, finished 3 for 3 with a double, a triple, an RBI and two runs scored to lead the Tigers. Cristian Baeza was 2 for 4 with an RBI to lead the Bronchos. Zach Attaway, who was 1 for 2 with a walk, scored both Odessa High runs. The Tigers opened the scoring with two runs in the third as Kaeleb Carrillo led off with a double, Jenkins followed with a triple and Peyten Kennard added a sacrifice fly. Odessa High responded in the bottom half of the inning on Baeza’s RBI single, but stranded runners at second and third. Brennan McFarland’s sacrifice fly in the fifth pushed Frenship’s lead to 3-1, but the Bronchos again responded in the bottom of the inning. Attaway and Gibrian Pena led off with walks and Baeza beat out a bunt to load the bases. Hervey Nieto delivered a sacrifice fly, but Pena was thrown out at the plate by Jenkins trying to score the tying run on Pilar Ramirez’s two-out single. “I’m really happy with the way we played,” Hulin said. “There’s nothing to be unhappy about. Sometimes you play good and you lose. That’s what happened today. “Frenship made one more play than we did, and when it’s tight that’s kind of what decides it.”
