Behind a solid offensive showing, the Odessa High girls soccer team notched a 7-0 win over San Angelo Lake View on Tuesday at Ratliff Stadium. From the start, the Lady Bronchos dominated offensive possession as they took aim at the net on every opportunity. After some unsuccessful scoring attempts early in the first half, Odessa High’s Yareli Barrera found the back of the net to get the Lady Bronchos on the scoreboard. The goal opened up the scoring for the Lady Bronchos as Alyssa Rocha put them up 2-0 after scoring off an assist by Miranda Cardona. Barrera found the net one more time before halftime for a 3-0 lead. She wasn’t finished as she completed her hat trick in the 46th minute and, four minutes later, found the back of the net a fourth time to give the Lady Bronchos a commanding 5-0 lead. With Odessa High coach Cecilia Kellar substituting freely, Odessa High continued to control the tempo in the second half by getting some good touches on the ball to create more scoring chances. Cardona got in on the action by scoring a goal in the 70th minute. A minute later, Cardona struck again to give Odessa High a 7-0 advantage. “We had a lot of possession during the game, working off the ball with each other and distributing was really good. It looked better in the second half and overall we did good,” Barrera said. After a pair of 1-1 draws last week, the Lady Bronchos were finally able to finish their scoring opportunities. “We put together some good combinations, some good goal scoring opportunities,” Kellar said. “We had some quality finishes, and that’s really what we’ve been talking about is sometimes we’re wasting our opportunities that we’re creating by taking a bad shot. “I think that we did a good job of making good decisions. Defensively, we did well. We worked the ball around well. We created a lot of options and holes for ourselves … very good performance.” Odessa High has one nondistrict game remaining as it hosts El Paso Montwood at 4 p.m. Friday before beginning District 2-6A play Feb. 8. “I think it was good for our team. Once we hit the net, we kept hitting it and it gave us opportunities that we haven’t had before. So, it opened up the field more,” Cardona said. “I think all the games we’ve played have prepared us really good in order to succeed in district.”
