The Odessa High boys soccer team’s comeback attempt came up short against Del Rio as the Bronchos lost, 2-1, in a nondistrict game Tuesday at Ratliff Stadium. Playing in chilly temperatures, the Rams built a 2-0 lead before Odessa High’s Alan Rubio’s goal with 17 minutes remaining in the game sparked new life for the Bronchos. But Del Rio (6-4-1) managed to hold off Odessa High (4-6-2) the rest of the way. “Odessa High always puts a good team on the field and I knew they were going to be aggressive,” Del Rio head coach Tani Canchola said. “We knew that they would be looking for the long ball and their number 10 is quick. “I thought we did a good job of stopping their lob pass. Defensively, I thought we did well.” Rubio had a chance in the 13th minutes to put the Bronchos on the scoreboard, driving in the penalty area before delivering a shot that went wide of the net. Seven minutes later, the Bronchos got another opportunity off a corner kick but it was to no avail as the Rams managed to clear the ball out of the box. Almost a minute later, the Rams nearly went ahead when Mark Limon fired a shot that was wide of the goal and the game remained scoreless. It wasn’t until there were 20 seconds left in the first half that Del Rio managed to get on the board with a goal by Austin Ramirez, giving the Rams the lead at the break. Del Rio doubled its lead 10 minutes into the second half with Limon’s goal. “It was a very tough game against a very good team,” sOdessa High head coach Eliseo Ortiz said. “Del Rio has a lot of talented players. “They have a very rich soccer culture, being a border town so that’s one of their big sports. We always try to schedule a game against them so that we can get ready for district season.” The Rams were unable to add to their lead and Rubio’s late goal kept the game alive for the Bronchos. “Just the fact that we fought back and tried to tie the game was a good one because we got the goal and kept fighting,” Ortiz said. “We had more opportunities than they did in the second half. It was good to see us try and come back.”
