Playing their first game in a week, the Odessa High Bronchos basketball team posted a 53-38 win over the Monahans Loboes on Tuesday night at the OHS Fieldhouse. With the win, the Bronchos moved to 2-8 for the season while the Loboes fell to 2-6. Ryan Brazeal led the Bronchos scoring 21 points while Caleb Murry had 14 and Kameron Gonzales had seven. “We have to take care of the ball,” said Odessa High head coach Anthony Dees. “We have to increase the pressure. We have to find ways to get the ball to our big guys. It was a good team win.” For the Loboes, Peyton Adams had 10 points while Calvin Sanchez and Chris Blair each had six. “I don’t think anybody can start a game and get down 25 points and expect to come back,” said Monahans head coach Jordan Ashmore. “We played better in the third and fourth quarters, but turnovers hurt us. We had missed shots and missed layups which is something you can’t do.” The Bronchos began on a 4-0 run. Justin Ortiz hit a 3-pointer to give the Bronchos a 7-4 lead with 5:07 in the first quarter. Brazeal hit a wide-open 3-pointer from the far-left side of the corner and Odessa High expanded its lead to 13-4 with 4:15 left in the opening quarter. Murry’s 3-pointer gave the Bronchos a 16-6 lead at the 2:00 mark of the first quarter. Brazeal hit another outside shot before the end of the quarter and the Bronchos had a 19-10 lead. Brazeal started the second quarter the same way he ended the first, by scoring a 3-pointer, extending the Bronchos’ lead to 22-10 with 7:14 on the clock. Gonzales scored a transition layup to give Odessa High a 26-10 lead with 6:05 left in the second quarter before the Loboes called a timeout. Monahans then used a 9-4 run to close the deficit to 30-19 with 1:44 left before halftime. Ortiz’s layup gave Odessa High a 34-20 lead with less than a minute in the second quarter. Brazeal hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to make it 37-20. Brazeal then scored another outside shot in the third quarter, giving the Bronchos a 42-22 lead. Gonzales hit a shot from the inside to extend Odessa High’s lead to 46-22 with 4:42 in the third. Brandon Sanchez hit a 3-pointer and then scored on a transition layup for the Loboes to bring Monahans’ deficit to 47-31 with less than a minute in the third. The Loboes used a 6-0 run to start the fourth quarter. Conner Anastasio’s basket with 2:56 left in the game was the Bronchos’ first basket of the fourth quarter, giving them a 49-37 lead.
