Throughout the consolation championship match in the silver bracket, Odessa High volleyball coach Victoria Smith remained calm and quiet on the bench. The third-year head coach of the Lady Bronchos wanted the team to work through some difficulties it experienced during pool play. Odessa High went winless on the first day of the Monahans Volleyball Tournament, but those fortunes changed in the silver bracket. The Lady Bronchos picked up back-to-back victories against Bowie and Crane to win the consolation championship. The Lady Bronchos defeated the Ladybirds in straight sets 25-15, 25-5. “That’s usually not my style — to sit and let them take care of things,” Smith said with a smile. “The way things went Friday and the first game (Saturday), I decided I was going to leave it up to them on what they wanted for the rest of this tournament. That turned out to work pretty well and we finally showed up.” For the Lady Bronchos’ counterpart at ECISD, Permian also collected a consolation championship title in the gold bracket, but for the Lady Panthers the victory was redemption for a loss during Friday’s pool play. The Lady Panthers rallied with a 22-25, 25-23, 25-14 victory over Pecos. The Lady Eagles defeated Permian during pool play. The Lady Panthers also picked up a victory against Alpine to reach the consolation title match. Permian finished pool play with a 2-1 record with its only loss to Pecos. The Lady Panthers are in a transition phase as they tried to replace outside hitter Jessica Nguyen and middle blocker Akor Maywin. “When you lose a big part of your offense, you are always looking to who is going to be next in line,” Permian head coach Gillian Herrera said. “We have seven hitters and I told them that we didn’t have to be perfect for tournament.”
